Can anyone reading this board who is knowledgable of Carter County history perhaps answer some questions for me. I have been reading newspapers on microfilm until I'm near cross-eyed and still haven't found it.
Wirt (or Ragtown as it was more commonly called) first got a post office in 1914.The post office was discontinued in 1973.From reading all the newspapers, Wirt was a jumpin' little town between 1914-1920 or maybe into the 30s.It never had a school (the kids went to school at Dundee).I found a 1918 Polks Directory that showed Wirt had a population of 500 in 1918.
While Healdton was 5 miles away, I've read articles that say Wirt was absorbed by Healdton. If this is true, when was it absorbed by Healdton?
I found in the newspapers where the bank at Wirt was robbed 4 times in 1932 and then the Wirt bank consolidated with the Healdton bank (which was being contemplated before the robberies). Now the loss of a bank in any town doomed the town to nonexistence.
Was Wirt every an incorporated town?Or was it always an unincorported town?
Bottom line, I'm trying to determine when Wirt ceased to exist.
