There was no Hugo until 1901-02 so if they did live in "Hugo" then their death would have had to be after that.
Without a specific date of death it's next to impossible to look up an obit. Early day newspapers didn't put all the death notices all neatly together like papers do today. Many are just "notices" like, John Doe died yesterday, and the notice can be buried anywhere in the newspaper. Without a date of death to work with there's just too many newspaper pages to search.
I wish you luck but without more to work with I'm afraid you won't find the obit unless someone just stumbles across it.
