Stephenson Led Offers Through Worried Week
The strange case of ALLEN STEPHENSON ended in the state hospital at Norman Wednesday. County officers took him there for treatment after he shot a man last Thursday, begged the man to shoot him, attempted suicide by drinking Lysol and frightened several county prisoners at the jail here Monday night. … Stephenson’s story began last Thursday afternoon when he walked to J. J. WAKELEY, who was fixing a fence on the Wakeley place two miles north and a half mile east of Ravia. Wakeley was being assisted by Stephenson’s wife. Stephenson pulled a pistol and shot Wakeley’s right arm, passed through his glasses’ case, breaking the glasses and hit a rib, not thought to be critical. Wakely then took the pistol from Stephenson and the latter asked to be shot with it. .. From Wakeley’s house, Stephenson walked to Ravia where he bought a bottle of Lysol at the drug store. J. F. PATE, owner, said the man gave no indication what he intended to do with the bottle. Stephenson went to a Ravia café, bought a soft drink and poured the Lysol into it and drank the mixture. The county sheriff’s office was called, the sheriff CHARLIE GILLIAM was over there and back… a doctor was called and an emetic given. Stephenson was placed in jail and then 11:30 Monday night, .. Prisoners were running from Stephenson who was at the top of the ‘cage’ at the time… placed in a cell reserved for mental cases…The jailer BILL COX said he appeared to be a sick man.
