My parents are both from Kiowa Co., and they know the Henderson's.I have a book called "Mountain View: 1899 - 1999, The First 100 Years," which has some info on the Henderson's.It says:
"Following the Civil War Robert H. (11/6/1838-12/20/1916) and Tabitha Dillon Henderson (9/8/1858-7/23/1916) moved from Tennessee to Texas where on July 18, 1869 their son, Edgar Dillon, was born.
At the age of 14, Edgar left home to work on the early day cattle drives. On his first drive, he worked as a cook's helper at the Chuck Wagon.Texas ranchers would pool their cattle to form large herds and move the cattle north through the Indian Territory of Oklahoma to the markets in Kansas.Edgar recalled that one of the most dangerous rivers to cross was the South Canadian because of the quicksand. He continued to work as a ranch hand until the Cheyenne-Arapaho territory opened for settlement.
On February 2, 1898 at Cloud Chief, Oklahoma, Edgar married Rachel Coatney Haley (11/25/1869-12/25/1918) whose family lived north of Mtn. View.Their first home was a half dugout near Ft. Cobb before settling at Saddle Mountain in 1911.Edgar and Rachel were the parents of Johnny Henderson Wolfe (10/19/1898-9/7/1973), Leroy (12/15/1900-3/11/1960) and Helen Henderson Reeder (4/7/1912-5/21/1984).Rachel died in the flu epidemic of 1918 while Edgar continued the cow-calf operation until his death on February 14, 1954."
There is more on living members of the family.E-mail me if you'd like the rest of the article.
