Mrs. Watson, Yes my ancestors did have a Choctaw Roll number. There were approximately 14 or so Turnages listed as Choctaw on the Final Rolls (found on acessgeneology.com).One of which is the name of my Ggrandfather James Turnage.
There must have been a trend for people to claim indian blood when there wasn't any because I have encountered much of this cynical attitude while doing my research...it is unfortunate. Also, some who claim indian ancestry, may be right, and simply unable to prove so.It is extremely difficult to trace indian ancestry, when so many hid and avoided putting their names on the rolls...not to mention those who changed thier names from one roll to the next so they couldn't be traced, this was very common.
I am aware there are some who "make these things up" but I am extrememly careful about calling someone a wannabee, since being an optimist, I'd like to think there are far less of those, than there are people who are sincere in their effort to find the link to their indian heritage.
I appreciate your effort to help.Thank you. Sharleen Metje
