Looking for Mark Stephens (Stevens) and family. Mark was born 10 May 1838 in Greene Co. PA to Henry and Nancy (Campbell) Stephens. He served in the Union Army through the Civil war and was wounded twice. Mark married (1) Sarah J Swartz, before 1877, most likely in Crawford Co., KS. They had one son James William Stephens born 13 June 1877 in Crawford Co., KS. Mark and Sarah were divorced in Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas 15 Sept 1886. James stayed with Mark. I don’t know any more about Sarah other than she was born in about 1851 in Illinois. Mark then married Tennie Smith 1 November 1886 in Berryville, Carroll County Arkansas. Mark and Tennie had two daughters, Minnie Belle Stephens born 23 August 1888 in Carroll County Arkansas and Ethel Mae Stephens born 18 November 1894. Now I have found census data that tells me that she was born in Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma, I believe Oklahoma to be correct but no positive proof, possibly McCurtain County OK. I don’t know if Tennie and Mark divorced or separated. According to family tradition Mark took Minnie from Tennie in about 1897 to cook and clean for him, he was living in Sevier county Arkansas. The 1910 census shows Mark living with Minnie and her husband Arthur Stell in DeQueen Arkansas and Mark is listed as being widowed. Now I don’t know if the “widowed” refers to Tennie or a Virginia Chauncy, I am not sure if Mark and Virginia were married. I found a record of an M H Stephens marrying Virginia Chauncy in October of 1897 in Berryville Carroll County Arkansas, but I am not sure this is the same Mark Stephens. I don’t know any more about Tennie other than she was born about 1864. Mark died 8 March 1920 in DeQueen, Sevier County Arkansas. His children also died there, James died 1 September 1965, Minnie Stell died in 1958 and Ethel Taylor died in 1966. They are all buried in the Avon Cemetery.
