My grandparents...Charles and Bertha Martin Verner...lived in the Mt. Hermon, McCurtain County area in, roughly, the 1915-1940 period. He ran a sawmill on land leased from the Choctaws and operated a small "store" on a dirt road in Mt. Hermon that runs parallel to the major paved road...not too far from what used to be called the "Johnson Store", operated by my Uncle Dent Johnson in the 1930s and 1940s. The Verners had a homestead on that dirt road. It burned down years ago... a new house stands there now. Their kids were Daisy (now 100 years old!), Gordon, Ruby, Edna, and Opal.
My Dad...Charles Gordon Verner (1913 OK-1984 CA)...went to high school in Broken Bow, graduating in 1931. In 1938, he ran for supervisor in District 1 against an incumbent, a doctor(?). My Dad lost by just a few (9) votes. My Mom...Josephine Patton Verner was very happy about the result, because now they could move to California.
My parents were close to the A. C. Bakers who lived in Mt. Hermon. "Pansy Baker" was mentioned many times by my parents. Her son was a preacher, I think.
Anyone know these people? I would be most happy to speak with anyone about them and those times.
