George D., May, Oscar, Earl, Elbert, Ambert Gray, c. 1900 Mystery!
(Arkansas, Oklahoma,Indian Territory and then where?) My Grandmother Louvenia Herrick b. c.1873 and her half-brother George Keet (Keats?) were “adopted” by a Gray Family about 1882 after her mother died. She used the name Lavina (sic) Gray on her marriage license to Wm. Walter Nix, St. Joe, Searcy Cty, Arkansas on Oct. 20, 1889.
George Keet/Gray per census records used the name Gray when living as an adultwith family inOkla, 1920.Family lore has it that George’s adopted father was Samuel Gray and they both became well to do. George got in a “situation” after shooting someone and took his family and NO ONE has ever heard from them since. Below is the information we have on this family:
1910 Haskell, CountyOkla Census Gray, George age 31, born in Arkansas, wife May age 32, born Ar, son Oscar, age 9, b. Ar, son Earl age 7, b. Ar, son Elbert age 6, b. Ar., son Ambridge age4, born in Ar.
Also found in Haskell County, Stigler, Okla was a Samuel Gray. It is believed this is the same man that raised or adopted George as a small child in Arkansas (or related to Grays of Arkansas or not at all???)Samuel Gray was a business man and a distributoer of land for the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian Nations during this period of time.It was noted that he did distribute land to George and to his wife.It is not known what family George married into, but his mother (Emily Caroline Bell) was at least 1/2 cherokee (Her father Col. James Madison Bell, Cherokee, whose sister married Stand Watie).
1920 Oklahoma Census, Pushmataha Cty. Gray, G.D. age 40, b. Ar, his father born in England, Maggie May wife 39, b. Ar, Oscar son 18, b. Ar, Earl son 17, born Ar, Elbert son 15, b. ar, Ambert son 13, born in Ok, Gladys daughter 6, born in Okla.
Records show George owned his farm and was free and clear. It was first found where George purchased land in this area in 1911 and from the state of Oklahoma in 1916.He was the owner of 3 bottom river farms. We find in 1918he began selling his land and 1925 sold his final property. Two farms away from where George lived his sister Lou Venia Nix and 3 of her children. We have not been able to locate George D. Gray since he moved from Stanley, Oklahoma.
Oscar Gray was born in 1901 in Arkansas. He was married to Lottie Moore on 17 Dec. 1921 in Clayton, Pushmataha Co, Ok.Lottie Moore was born in 1903 in Oklahoma. We have a picture of Oscar about 21 years old.No pictures of George or the others.
You are invited to help my family solve the mystery of the disappearance of this branch of our family.
