One thing about the US Census, for marital status it CAN'T be trusted.MANY women identified they were widowed, even knowing they were divorced, separated or abandoned. It was far easier to say that even during quick interview with an enumerator than admit to the stigma of the alternative.Men, also, did the same thing, rather to admit they were divorced or had left a wife...somewhere.
A family tree owned by "Jarnoldus" identifies he was married to Caroline Putman in 1860 and had three sons and four daughters by 1871.This tree and another (having less information) did not identify when or where he died.
There are two volunteers in Lincoln Co on the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness: http://www.raogk.org/oregon3.htmhttp://www.raogk.org/oregon3.htm READ the guidelines BEFORE CONTACT.Tammy might be able to handle more of the potential searches: Courthouse for County Auditor/Recorder to determine any death records, the County Superior Court might have a probate record which also might have been recorded at the County Recorder.
