Oh, I see the Oregonian archives are a paid archive. That's a shame.Would have loved to read about the shooting!
I've found the shipping list for Elizabeth Wiley and family travelling to the US aboard the SS Sonoma (via Sydney, having started their journey in New Zealand), arriving in San Francisco on 8 May 1907.On board was a Thomas Harris. His citizenship is given as USA, his age is 27.
Elizabeth's eulogy states that she met her husband-to-be on board the ship.
If he's my Thomas Harris, he would actually have been 29 (born 1877), not 27.Yet Nathan Hankin gave his birth year at various times as 1873, 1877 and 1880.1880 would have indeed made him 27 when on board the Sonoma, but 1873 would have made him 34.
He certainly could spin a good story from the sounds!
