The following is the information to date that we have been using on Baltasar Stroman. However, there is some evidence to suggest that he was not the father of the children listed here and researchers are attempting to clear this evidence through further information from the German church records available through microfilm at the LDS Family History Centers. Please check further with the Orangeburgh Swiss-German Genealogical Society web pages which gives early histories of Orangeburgh First Families.
STROMAN (Strauman, Strohman)
1. BALTASAR (Balthasar, Baltazar, Baltzegar) STROMAN (Strauman, Strohman) was born about 1685 in Waldenburg, Canton of Basel, Switzerland and died between 1736 and 1737. It seems that he is buried in the Stroman Cemetery in Orangeburg, SC off Hwy. 301
Information from page 190 on STROMAN FAMILY in book "Jennings-McMillan -and other early Families of South Carolina compiled by Carnice Jennings Groves. "It is reasonable to presume that Baltzer Stroman was the father of John Jacob Stroman, Henry Stroman and Barbara Stroman" mentioned in the Book of Record by Rev. Giessendanner of the Orangeburgh District. "The first entry in the record, 3 Nov. 1737, is the marriage of Miss Barbara Stroman to Simon Sanger." Baltzer Stroman probably died before that time. Refer also to "History of Orangeburg County" by A. S. Salley, Jr. 1998 on pages 94, 98, 107, 201, 205 and 208. Henry and John Jacob Stroman witnessed the marriage of Barbara Stroman and Simon Sanger. She later witnessed a baptism of John Jacob's daughter. John Jacob Stroman named one of his son Baltzer (Balzer) Stroman.
A Swiss report dated April 23, 1735 states that Balthasar (Baltzer) Strauman of Waldenburg, Switzerland together with other families, including wives and children, (42 souls) "Had started down the Rhine to Carolina.: "Owing to the loss of record nothing can be said about the wife and number of children of Baltzer Stroman. He seems to have arrived safely in Carolina, because the following year the release of some property of his, which he left behind came up in Council, April 18, 1736" from Vol. 2, page 92, Faust, Albert Bernhardt, A.B., Ph.D. "Lists of Swiss Emigrants in the Eighteenth Century to the American Colonies". Washington, D.C.: National Genealogical Society, 1920.
Among the Swiss families who accompanied Baltzer Stroman on the voyage to Carolina were the early settlers, Henry Salley, Henry Rickenbaker, Hans Giegelmann and Emmanuel Giegelmann. They reached Carolina before September, 1735, as 200 acres were laid out to Henry Salley in Orangeburgh District on that date and his land adjoined land laid out to Henry Rickenbaker. Some of the other families in the area in and around Orangeburgh since 1735 were Hans George Staley, Henry Horger, Henry Snell, Hans and Peter Roth, Hans Henry Felder, Hans George Keis, Melchior Ott, Henry Faust, Ludwig Linder, John Friday, Peter and John Moorer or Maurer and Hans Dietrick.
