If you had family living in this area and expected help from the 1940 Census, you may be disappointed. I have examined especially the Evensville Mountain families and there appears to be fabricated names, names with the wrong families, children with the wrong families, wrong ages, and in general, an intentional shoddy piece of work by the census taker. He apparently didn't visit all the homes. I have informed Ancestry that this 1940 RHEA Census by this census taker may need to be re-constructed and as soon as possible to get help from those left with some memory of those who lived there at the time. There is an "invented" Pelfrey family made up of non-existent names, mismatched mates, and some married over a year with children of their own. "John" Pelfrey, the head of the house was probably based upon James W. Pelfrey; Lennis Pelfrey was not the wife of "John," but was Lennis Bridwell, the wife of Jack Pelfrey.
William, the 20 year old son of the mythical "John", didn't exist either.
Faye Pelfrey was from the Thomas Albert Pelfrey family and has been married to Lee Clark for over a year and has a child. Ironically, she is listed with her husband and child earlier in this census.
Bernice Pelfrey, the 16 year old daughter, is another made-up name perhaps corrupted from the much older Bernettie, wife of James W Pelfrey who wasn't listed either.
Robert Pelfrey was probably a son from the Thomas Albert Pelfrey Family.
You might want to also check the names of the children of the family of Hillis and Edith Dunn and also the family of Lee Roberts for further inaccuracies.
Other families known to be living in this neighborhood called Hickory Grove in April 1940 (and not visited by the census taker) were: John and Mary Hope Daniels, Eva Hope Smith, the Sam and Ida Pelfrey Hawk family, Lark Swafford and "Minnie" Lucile A. Cray, the Thomas Albert Pelfrey family, the Ray and Madge Clark Pelfrey and son family, and the Virgil and Lola Thurman Pelfrey family. Finally at the end of the mailman's route on Wash Pelfrey Road was the home of the elderly James W. and Sarah Bernettie Neal Pelfrey.
