SEEKING AN EXPLANATION OF WHY THIS HAPPENED IN EASTERN TN DURING THE CIVIL WAR.
William Marion Phillips son of Wm. Phillips and Jemima Pullen m 1829 Rogersville, Hawkins Co, Tn. (My ggfather Thomas Phillips b 1801 was a brother of Wm. and the uncle of William Marion Phillips.)
My search of Civil War records on for all variants of his name have not turned up any evidence of W.M. Phillips having been a Civil War soldier.
Murder may have taken place in Greene Co TN or Hawkins Co TN where he is buried at St. Clair.
Tombstone insscription "Memry of W.M. Phillips Born Dec 1, 1835 was murdered March 31, 1864 By David Fry, Clove Berry, Frank Berry, Vol Keel and Laz kite"
Info about the culprits: David Fry was a Captain in the Union Army
Clove Berry (John C. Berry?) Several John and C. Berrys were from TN and soldiers for both confederacy and union.
Frank Berry No Frank Berry found as a soldier in the Civil War
Vol Keel (Valentine Keel) Two are listed in Civil War records. I believe this is correct: Union Private. Company D, 1st Cavalry Regiment Tennessee.
Lazarus Kite b Hawkins, Tennessee, 1810 married Lucy Spears (A Ruth Phillips married a William Spiers, 1793 Rowan Co NC) “He then joined the Union army, enlisting in Co. D 8th Tennessee Infantry, U.S.A., in June of 1863. Later he seems to have again become dissatisfied with his life as a "galvanized Yankee". At which time he deserted the Union army, in October of 1864. He took with him an "Enfield rifle and appendages" which the U.S. charged to his pay account, the amount of $21.25. He seems to have returned to his regiment later, and made up the "bad time", as he was mustered out in June of 1865.” http://chriswkite.blogspot.mx/2010/09/john-lazarus-kite-rebe..http://chriswkite.blogspot.mx/2010/09/john-lazarus-kite-rebe...
