The HECKLE name is not a very common and very little is known about Great-grandad Robert M. HECKLE. What is known is that he marriied a mormon girl, in Utah, by the name of Anna HELM against the wishes of her mother Emma CARPENTER (nee SMITH) due to religious reasons. Robert was born in Alabama in 1847 and as a child he and his parents moved to Texas .Robert , according to family stories , served in the Civil War and latter served in the Indian wars of the 1870’s as a scout for the Army.Robert always loved Texas and became to be known as “Texas Bob Heckle”.Robert traveled the west from Texas to Utah, Oregon back to Texas to New Mexico and Arizona. During the second time in Texas Robert and Anna started their family of twelve children born over a 27 year time span. The oldest two ,David and Robert were born in Texas, Anna and Emma ( the mother of the late country western singer Marty Robbins) were born in New Mexico. Ellen , Hattie, Agnes (my grandmother), Frank , Travis, Green, Lee, and Clarence were all born in Arizona. During his latter years Robert wrote poetry about Texas and the southwest. Census records state that Robert's father was born in New York, and his mother born in Pennsylvania.
