Thanks for replying. I went to Grimes and Waller counties and turned up nothing so far. I did find the unknown Morse's widow, Mary Ann Harrison in a listing of deeds in Grimes county while she still had the last name of Morse before she married John Kewley.
Yes, they were in Hempstead before it became Grimes Co. and I had momentarily forgotten which was which. The Morse children appear in the Kewley household in 1860. The oldest child was George Willamson Morse who was born about 1850. It would have been in the very early 1850s that the unknown Morse was killed.
I have seen this John Morse before I think. I don't think he was from New York though, but I might be wrong. But thanks for reminding me because it's always possible, esp. if he might have been in Matagorda Co.
I do recall seeing two cattle trails leading towards Laredo. Wait, I think one was the Camino Real and the other had another name which I presently forget.
