Hugh, Thank you for the suggestions. I would not approach the 1920 census without and index (or soundex), and my local library (Plano Gladys Harrington) does have the 1920 census, but not the index. I will have to wait until I can get to down town Dallas library. I believe he lived in either Polk Co or Ellis Co at the time of his death.
I do not know if he was in the Civil war or not. My cousin says that he was born in 1845, so he was certainly old enough. But I also do not know when he moved to Texas.
I searched the Texas death index for 1903-1940 myself. It is no big deal. CASHxxx only takes up maybe three pages.
