I don't know where you live, but since you are just beginning your search, I suggest you check around, see if there is a genealogy society in your area. They often offer classes for beginners, or at least have people who will give you some help and instructions.Genealogists just love to share.
Also, check to see if you have a Family History Center near you. Most are online, now, and the LDS have a subscription to Ancestry.com.Ancestry has an index and digital images of the 1930 census, which you could use yourself.FHC volunteers will help you with their computers. Some FHCs sponser annual Family Fairs, which are free. It's usually a one day event with speakers on various subjects going all day long in smaller classes through out the building.
FHCs are located in LDS church buildings, but they will not talk to you about religion, so don't worry.(^_^)
Have you used the LDS site?http://www.familysearch.orghttp://www.familysearch.orgIt is very helpful, but again, you should have someone give you some pointers on using it to get the most out of it.Volunteers at your local FHC can help you with that.
