On the names on the census records, it depends on who was giving the name to the enumerator. Sometimes, I believe, that if it is the actual person giving the name they will give their full name or if someone else gives the information they might give the nickname or their "go by" name. This is common. Also spelling and phonetics are a big problem.
The census is released for public view every 72 years. The 1940 census will not be out until 2012 and 2022 for the 1950. The 1930 was just released in 2002.
As to your husbands grandfather, he was most likely born after 1930. If you know where he was born or where he lives that might be help. If he is living, we would need to correspond via e-mail instead of this media.
