We know that Samuel Turner came to Texas 15 September 1837 and received a land grant for coming. He married in Nacogdoches County in 1839 and was in Jasper County, Texas by 1850.He shows up in 1860 in Trinity County, where his wife, Emily Midkiff dies May 1860.Samuel either died or left Texas as he is not on the 1870 census, but his underage children are living with married children. Samuel and Emily had 7 children.
Is there a way to see the Character Certificates?
I got a copy of the marriage license from Nacogdoches and asked about the application for the license and was told these applications (if one exists) were in some sort of storage room and just "dumped" in there and imposssible to search.
We have 4 direct lines working on this Samuel Turner and cannot get past 1837.
My cousin, Barbara, and her brother have done the TURNER DNA which helped some, but provided no real leads.Barbara was in Austin, Texas this weekend searching the Archives, Barker History Center, the Catholic Church records and the State Library. We have the land records and they provided no help.
