John Wesley Adkisson, born Saline County, Missouri, October 28, 1841, died June 13, 1903 in Texas, is my great grandfather.He was a Methodist Episcopal Church, South Educator.
J. W. served in 1883 President of Central College at Sulphur Springs, Texas 8 years (c. 1883 - 1891)
1891 President of Polytechnic College at Ft. Worth, now known as Texas Wesleyan in Ft. Worth.
His wife died in 1892
He re-married in December 1892 to Mary
1894 resigned to enter the regular pastorate.
He filled a 6-month vacancy in Cleburne Station.
He then transferred to Coleman Station for 1-year.
Served in Waxahachie for two years.
The following year he was sent to Granbury for six months.
Again, he returned to teaching.Established a training school at Clarendon, Texas.1 year.
Then to Blooming Grove to assist in establishing another training school for the Church.
In April 1903 a large carbuncle appeared on his neck, and after two months of great suffering and pain he died.He is buried in Waxahachie..Died June 13, 1903
I have the actual marriage license - J. W. Adkisson married Miss Mary A. Jones in Smith County in December 1892. 1900 Census shows her to be 43 years old at the time of the Census. I cannot find any info on Mary A. Jones Adkisson.
J.W.'s 1st wife died April 16, 1892 in Ft. Worth, Texas
I am also trying to find information on JWs son, John F, born 1882 in Mississippi and (apparently) raised by Mary A. Jones from the age of 10.
