Whoever copied the census for FamilySearch misread the census for Mississippi. I guess they thought MI stood for Missouri instead of Mississippi. It is clear on the census page.
There is no record of land in Menard or any of the other counties that I know he was in. He did not have a will or probate. This is one thing that makes him so difficult to trace.
Yes the Alexander of the 1870 census is listed as M for mulato. David Davis is white.
I was told be family that David Davis should be buried in Eden cemetery in Menard, but there is no marker or record for him there.
This is one of those families that no progress is ever made. After 25 years, we still know no more than we started with on David Davis.
Since he died about 1900, there is no death record for him.
Since he did not own land, there is no settlement of his estate.
His wife and the sons moved to Gila Co., AZ. I have found them there. David Davis did not go. I don’t know why the wife and sons left Texas. The daughter stayed in Menard. She was already married.
