Margaret Weinzapfel Rasch, 107 years of age, passed away February 13, 2005, in Cordova, Tenn. She was born February 10, 1898, in Windthorst, Texas.
In her lifetime, Margaret was a hard worker and strong in her Catholic faith. Growing up she helped her Papa in the Weinzapfel grocery store. As a young woman she went to Dallas to learn business skills. She worked for RKO Pathe News there. Upon moving to Galveston she met Hans Rasch, he hired her as his secretary at Wilkens & Biehl Steamship Agency. They married in 1932, and built a home in Garden Villas in Houston. She was widowed in 1938, and went back to work in order to raise her two small children. She was employed by Erwin Bag Co. a division of Burrus Mills. She reached mandatory retirement there but continued bookkeeping for small businesses until she was in her late eighties. She also put in many hours as a volunteer with Saint Joseph Hospital Auxiliary.
Her daughter, Gretchen Rasch Harper preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son Hans and his wife Ann, 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, a sister Alice Hemmi and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her long life will be held with a vigil on Wednesday, February 16, 2005, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home in Friendswood, TX, with a rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2005, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 6725 A Reed Road, Houston, Texas, with Father Ronald Oakham, O. Carm officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, TX.
