Caroline L. Houston, my gggg grandmother, was born in 1836 in Tennessee to Mary Ann Crawford and Mr. ______ Houston.I would dearly love to know his name. If anyone has any information, it would so help me solve this mystery. Caroline's parents - Joseph b. 1790, and Mary Ann Cauble Crawford -had migrated to Tennessee from North Carolina with Joseph's father, James Crawford, ( a vet of the Rev. War)d. 1833 Tipton County, TN.
According to family lore, Mr. Houston was kin to the great Sam Houston. He left for Texas in 1836 or 1837 for work, presumably, with instructions for his family to follow. When his wife, daughter, and inlaws arrived in east Texas in 1838, they learned he had been killed fighting Indians!
My research has uncovered this. A Mr. "A. Houston" was killed in the SURVEYORS BATTLE in Dawson, Texas, when their group of 25 was surrounded by 150 Kickapoo Indians who were hostile to settlers in Texas. A monument has been placed there listing all the deceased, including the name A. HOUSTON.In Texas history books, he is mentioned by the name Andrew or Andy Houston. This is ALL I have to go by.
Another confusing tidbit, according to ancestors since then, is that the name WILSON HOUSTON has been mentioned!
