Seking death notification of Jeptha M. (Monroe?) Fortson, b. 1845 Leake Co. Ms. died after 1910 census Gregg Co.Tx. ( Have signed records of CSA Pension application 1912 Gregg Co.Tx. ) Jeptha M. marred Margaret Elizabeth Riley, Oct. 3, 1871 Panola Co.Tx. ( some data bases list marriage in Van Zandt Co.Tx. Same Date,-actual place is inRecord Book C, page 140 Panola Tx. Records)( this double recording of same day and year marriage leads me to account for some sites reporting an earlier marriage for Jeptha and a possible lst child. No real proof has ever been found of another lst marriagae or child being born to Jeptha Fortson.)Wish we could clear that one up too.
Jeptha M. Fortson was son of Aaron J. Fortson b. 1816 and Pamelia Willbanks. Aaron was 13th child of William Fortson and Ann Higginbotham.
Jeptha Fortson appears to have been a farmer in Panola Co.Tx., married and moved to Van Zandt Co.Tx.and in the 1880 VZ census recordsas a preacher and laterfollowed a preaching route to McLennan Co.Tx. by the 1900 census. He had 3 sons and 2 daughters. One daughter the youngest, b. 1884 was P.Ella Fortson, married in 1898 at age 14 to George W. Willingham in Falls Co.Tx. and removed to Gregg Co.Texas by 1901.The remaining Fortson family moved with them to Gregg Co.Tx. and were in the 1910 census living on Willingham propertyand later in 1912, Jeptha signed for a CSA pension application and it was rejected. It was obviously not reapplied for, but copies of Jepthas surrender and pardon papers prove his actual enlistement.Jeptha and wife Margaret are not found after the 1912 application. Family accounts say Jeptha and Margaret raised Ellas youngest childb. 1909, until school years began in Gregg Co.Tx. School at that time was named Harmony Grove in Judson area of Longview, Texas. This has been long and windy but - I thank you for your patience. I am seeking any info on Jepthas death and burial. Thanks.
