My Ancestor, claimed to have served in a Texas Ranger unit. He did not arrive in Texas until 1849 at age 7. I believe his claim was to have served in the 1st Texas Mounted Rifles from Apr 1861 to Apr 1862. This unit was divided up into companies and served on the frontier chasing outlaws. Many volunteers later joined the 4th Texas Calvary "Texas Rangers",taking the name with them. My ancestor was injured and choose the 17th Texas Infantry which was part of Walker's Texas Division. So, his service in the Confederate Army was confirmed. But, I wonder if the first unit was considered a Ranger unit,
