Two years later, Henry Lee, II was elected Gov. of VA. In 1793, he married Ann Hill Carter. They were the parents of (among others) Robert Edward Lee, born Jan. 19, 1807. Matilda Lee had inherited Stratford from her grandfather so the house devolved to her son, Henry Lee, IV. Ann Carter Lee and her children left Stratford, and moved to Alexandria, where they lived in poverty. Henry Lee, IV (1787-1837)mar. Anne McCarty. Her sister, Elizabeth, lived with the Lees. There was scandal involving Henry and Elizabeth, resulting in Elizabeth's returning to the fold of her grandmother, and petitioning the court for another guardian. Shunned by his neighbors, and having spent Anne's inheritance, Henry sold Stratford. His life declined thereafter. Henry died of influenza in Paris, 30 Jan 1837.
