From his Revolutionary War pension application, we know he left Philadelphia county for Augusta county, VA, when he was still a small child. In the Fall of 1780, Peter enlisted in the Augusta county militia and marched off in the company of Capt. Thomas SMITH to fight in the Revolutionary War. The company wintered in North Carolina after much marching and no action and there joined the command of General Nathaniel Greene. In March of 1781, Greene gave battle to General Cornwallis at Guliford Courthouse, an affair in which the British ultimately prevailed but at a very high cost in casualties. Peter and his company of Virginia militia were participants in this fight and according to his pension application, it was the only fighting he was ever a part of. About a week or ten days after the battle, his enlistment expired and he returned to Augusta county. There in 1782, he is said to have married a GIBSON, perhaps a sister of his brother's wife, Mary GIBSON, and ten or twelve years later removed to the newly established state of Tennessee, living first in Sullivan county and about a year later settling in Knox county where the family remained. He married again on 4 May 1829, Sophia CLAPP in Knox Co., TN. He died there in January of 1840.
