Thanks for the reply. I didn't give his name because if I had i'm sure some well meaning people would have gone on perhaps a long search without finding any more that I have.
He's a very long story and I am getting down to a very short list of possible records to check. It's not that I have not tried. One of the far out things I have tried is his hospital record at his death (I was actually able to get them). Late in life he sold everything he owned and moved into a rented apartment and late one afternoon he had a heart attack and was taken to a nearby hospital where he died a few hours later. He had married late in life and had no children and his wife had passed away about 20 years earlier. All his close relatives had been gone for years.
He should have registered for the WW1 draft but he is not in the index. It's possible I can find him as misspelled-likely a long search.
I'm casting about for ideas and yes, I will be contacting Washington DMV.
