Nels Edwin Nelson and Hattie - Harriet Mae (White) Nelson arrived in Carson, Skamania County, Washington about 1911.The twins, Ray and Roy were born there on 04 October 1911.Martha Olive Nelson was born in Maple, Douglas County, Wisconsin on 30 June 1907.She reportedly contracted polio as a 2-3 year old child, and walked with a limp thereafter. She did not attend high school with her brother John and sister Helen because of the 5 mile walk, much of it along the S.P. & S. Railway between Carson and Stevenson, Washington. (To follow the orginal highway would have taken much too long because of the sinuous alignment and the poor grade - which was not the case with the railroad!) My notes indicate that Martha Olive Nelson married Henry Balsiger on 23 August 1925.I don't have the place of the marriage recorded. If I was told this, I've forgotten already and not recorded it in my computer program. Henry and Martha resided in California in the winter and in Carson in the summers.Apparently Henry was a carpenter and was able to find work readily. In Carson they lived in the house that was later the Nazarene Parsonage.
The baby was reportedly dead at birth from umbilical cord strangulation. My notes indicate that this baby shares a burial plot with Catherine (Nelson) Smith's triplett Viola Mae Smith that died as a baby. ---John
