Seeking information about and/on descendants of Elnathan BOYNTON and Annie Elizabeth MARSHALL, who lived in New Lisbon during the period 1864-1880.
Elnathan BOYNTON was born 1842 in New Hampshire, to Abel BOYNTON and Syrena LAWRENCE, and moved with his family to New Lisbon. He served in the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry, and was posted to Louisiana. In 1864 he married Annie MARSHALL Carrigan, of Baton Rouge.
Annie MARSHALL was born 1830 in Stevensburg VA, daughter of Charles Louis MARSHALL (1808-?) and Catherine ROSS (1812-1866). Her paternal grandparents were John MARSHALL and Elizabeth McGILL of Augusta GA.
In 1864, Annie already had at least three children by J. W. CARRIGAN (ca 1815-?), a Baton Rouge lawyer who was a native of New York. These were: John Marshall CARRIGAN (1854-1930), Charles W. CARRIGAN (ca 1858-?), and Maude CARRIGAN (ca 1861-1894).
Elnathan & Annie returned to New Lisbon, along with some or all of Annie’s CARRIGAN children, and during the period 1865-1875 had four of their own, all born in New Lisbon: Sarah Lorena BOYNTON, Halbert Elnathan BOYNTON, Arthur Stillwell BOYNTON, and Roberta Lee (Berta) BOYNTON.
The family moved to Atlanta GA ca 1880, where by 1890 Elnathan was a contractor and Annie was proprietress of Yosemite Nursery. Elnathan died in 1911, and Annie in 1928. Both are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta.
Surnames of descendants of this couple may include SOWER, WRIGHT, O’DONNELL, AUSTIN, HALLIGAN, JONES, MOULDER, and CHATHAM.
I am especially interested in the circumstances of the marriage of Elnathan BOYNTON and Annie MARSHALL. This is believed to have occurred on 05 Feb 1864. It was somewhat unusual, to say the least, for a Southern woman of 33, with three or more children, to marry a Union soldier of 21, while the war was not yet over.
It is not clear where Elnathan and Annie were married. Neither Juneau County nor East Baton Rouge Parish LA has a record of the marriage.
I am also interested in tracing several of Annie MARSHALL’s nephews and nieces, including Walter MARSHALL, Eveline MARSHALL and Virginia MARSHALL (Mrs. Edward A. WILLIS), all of New Orleans, and Mrs. Julius A. POSTON (first name unknown), of Natchez MS.
