Looking for any info in relation to Galligans of Lafayette Co., Wisconsin - mining families specifically in/around the areas of Shullsburg, New Diggings, Benton, etc. before 1900 - some descendants may have ended up near Denver, Colorado.
My 3g's grandmother was SUSAN M GALLIGAN: b.1840 NY,NY m.1859 Shullsburg, WI to JAMES AUSTIN DORAN (b.1840 Co. Wicklow, IRL) d.1914 Dubuque, IA -in a journal, James (my 3g's grandfather) talks of a JAMES GALLIGAN (a brother or cousin of Susan's?) that traveled with him to mine in Colorado - James died of smallpox there in 1872 on a claim in Golden
Susan's sister, BRIDGET GALLIGAN: b.1842 NY,NY m.abt 1865 Shullsburg/New Diggings, to JAMES ALDERSON (b.1845 England) d.1915 New Diggings, WI -had 10 ALDERSON children that I know of
Susan's sister, CATHERINE GALLIGAN: b.1850 New Diggings, WI d.supposedly died young (not yet found in 1860 census)
Susan's father, MATHEW GALLIGAN: b.abt 1810 Ireland (county unknown) m.unknown, most likely late 1830's in NY,NY d.aft 1860 WI? -last found in Shullsburg, 1860 census
Susan's mother, BRIDGET FITZPATRICK: b.abt 1810 Ireland (county unknown) d.aft 1870 WI? -last found in Alderson household, Shullsburg, 1870 census -Bridget's bro. THOMAS FITZPATRICK (b.1811 Ireland) also of Shullsburg area
The earliest Galligan record I have is a NY,NY 1840 census listing Mathew Galligan just a few lines above his brother-in-law, Thomas Fitzpatrick. The next record is a New Diggings, WI 1850 census listing the Galligans and the 3 daughters I mentioned above.I've seen other little pockets of Galligans in the census records around this area but have absolutely no info on them - no connection apparent as of yet.Any information whatsoever pertaining to this Galligan family would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
