Have recently determined that my paternal g-father Anton Joseph ERNEST arrived unaccompanied in NY on 22 May 1882 on the Castor sailing from Amsterdam.Wife Theresa and daughter Amelia arrived in NY on 08 Sep 1883 on the Donau sailing from Bremen. They settled on a farm about midway between Morse and Glidden in Ashland County. We have had no reason to believe that he lived anywhere but the Glidden vicinity however his obituary in the Ashland Daily Press stated that he (they?) initially settled in Athens.
We have copies of his naturalization documents and his Declaration of Intention dated 23 Oct 1882 was in the Circuit Court, Marathon County. We have always wondered why anything took place in Marathon County.I now wonder whether he (they?) really did temporarily settle in Athens. The petition for Naturalization dated 24 July 1915 made in Ashland states that the Declaration of Intention was made in Rhinelander, Circuit Court of Marathon County. All this leads me to ask 2 questions:
1)Rhinelander was in Marathon County from 1850 to 1874.Then in Lincoln County from 1874 to 1887.Then in Oneida County from 1887 to present.Did the Circuit Court of Marathon County in 1882 encompass more than Marathon County?
2) What newspapers were there in 1882/1883 in the Athens area that might possibly have information regarding immigrants settling and or relocating?
