I'd like to research the background of my family home and surprise my Mom with any info possible. She has owned it almost 40 years.
The home is located on North Main Street, one block south of the Racine Zoo. It is across the street and at the opposite end of the block from Lakeview Park, one house from Yout Street. There was a family named FISHER that lived next-door for many years and next to them, lived the VAN SUSTERN family, also for many years.
I'd like to learn more about this large 2-story brick home, such as when it was built, when it got the front addition, when and why it was turned into a 2-family and who did the work. Any pictures would also be terrific! Family stories about the previous owners would also be great to hear about.
Here is what info I have; As far back as I can go, there was a family with the last name of RIEGELMAN living here. The father John was a carpenter. His wife was Hattie and they had a son John, also. I think he ended up as a doctor, moving to Milwaukee around 1945. There seems to have been many families with the RIEGELMAN name, living in the area on Erie, N Wisconsin, St Clair streets and also on the same block, around the same time.
Up until this time, it seems the home was a single family. About this same time, by looking at city directories, the home was converted into a 2-family. Here are the subsequent families, connected to the home;
Oscar & Louise M CHRISTIANSON (1945-1950) Peter HIBMA-lived upstairs (1945-1950) Mrs Kate FOERTSCH-widow of Fred (1950-1952) George & Anna WELFEL-lived upstairs (1950-1966) James E & Jean MOHLHAUSER (1952-1954) Edward G & Harriet H FRITCH (1954-1962) Charles R & Jean GOERS (1962-1968) Patricia J PIEHLER-lived upstairs (1967-1970)
