Racine Journal Times Bulletin November 25, 1934 ESSAY BY FRANKLIN STUDENT WON PRIZE OF $10 IN CONTEST The following essay won the $10 cash prize given by the First National bank in the Racine Service league's essay contest, "Ten Reasons Why I Would Choose Racine As My Home."It was written by Eileen Buresh of the Franklin Junior high school.Eileen dedicates her essay "to all persons who made Racine the wonderful city that it is." 1.I would choose Racine as my home because I have a love for Racine.It was the place where I was brought up and the place where I received my guidance for my future life.To me Racine is "Home."As a student, I look forward to Racine as my future place of residence, because it offers me many opportunities of making my living.Racine, as we all realize, is a great industrial city.Racine, in prosperous times, employs thousands of workers.We manufacture various products of international fame.When traveling in foreign countries, we come in contact with many of our home products.It fills us with a certain pride that Racine has a share in the mass production of many useful things. Cites Education Aids 2.Racine offers many advantages to people seeking knowledge.It has many schools, which are efficiently run.Institutions for the teaching of finer arts are also numerous.Racine has a full spirit of democracy.Parents may choose either religious or public schools to send their off-spring to.Any citizen knows each tax dollar spent for education gives its worth in future good citizens by which the community is the beneficiary.The national campaign against closing of schools has been upheld by Racine.None of her schools have closed.Every child of our city is given an equal chance to learn things desired.We have an average supply of skilled educators.Racine has been fortunate enough to pay our teachers.This accomplishment of paying our school employees shows that our city has an efficient city government. 3.Racine, under the mayor-alderman form of government has managed to take care of approximately 67,000 citizens.Racine, without doubt, has upheld the preamble to our constitution.Whenever the backing of our citizens is needed, we form a perfect union to put Racine over the top.In celebrating our centennial it was proven that through the cooperation of our citizens we can unionize and succeed in our enterprises.We have only to look to our police and fire departments to find that we are assuring domestic tranquility and providing for the common defense.In this case also, through the efficiency of our government, we have succeeded in paying these employees, that are so necessary. Death Rate Low 4.In considering a place in which to make a home, health is important.For a city of its size, Racine is very healthful.The death-rating of our community is low.Our health department has a wonderful clinic.Nurses employed by the city help to carry on free vaccinations to prevent any dangerous epidemics.The drinking water of Racine is kept pure by expert chemists.Citizens of Racine have eyes for the future.They are now discussing a sewage disposal project to make Racine still more healthful.Our hospitals are all modernized and are always open to poor unfortunates.Racine has many skilled people of the medical profession. 5.Everyone has time in which they wish to have some enjoyment.A city with advantages must provide some means of recreation.Racine holds fund and merriment for persons of all ages.It has many theaters, where people gather to laugh and cry.A good skating rink is open to the public to enjoy themselves free of charge.In the warmer part of the year our beach welcomes you.The parks of Racine are of the best.They are full of the latest equipment for all kinds of exercise.Sports fans may watch games of various types in spare moments.Any kind of fun may be found in Racine, if one will take the time to find it. Places to Worship 6.Racine offers not only freedom of living, but it also offers freedom of worship.Many persons, young and old, seek religious guidance.Our city has a good supply of churches of all denominations.I, as a public citizen, have a right to attend any of Racine's churches free of charge.Free donations are given when one feels the urge.We are blessed with numerous men of the gospel to comfort us in our sorrow, and to rejoice with us when we are happy.Racine again shows her spirit of democracy.Its citizens are given the freedom of either accepting her offered religious teachings or to denounce them.Moral guidance is often found necessary for the running of a good government. 7.Racine shows great accomplishment in the building field.Whether it be in individual homes or public buildings Racine may be proud of her constructions.Most of our residential districts are quite modern.In Racine, one does not find any slums.Rather, we find the majority of our buildings are comfortable and substantial.We as citizens have only to point to our new city hall and court house to show our modernism.Although not new, our libraries well serve the public.We have a wonderful public building called the Memorial Hall.This building is kept up by the taxpayers and by patriotic organizations.All of our public constructions are well kept up.Our citizens are always reminded to keep their place of residence neat and clean.Our garbage disposal system helps them to do this. Good Transportation 8.In our modern world the average person is always going somewhere.Some go in search of knowledge.Some go in search of fun.An advantage of any city is having adequate means of transportation and communication.Racine is again on the top.We have means of transportation that allows us to arrive at any destination.Our new bus system is our common means of traveling.Citizens may communicate with friends and business associates over our large net of telephone wires.Trains of distant towns pick up Racine's travelers.Our harbor is one of the best and may some day connect us with the coast. 9.Racine is a city of many lodges, clubs and unions.Some of her lodges have achieved international fame.New clubs are being formed every day; each has some marked goal.Any person may find a group of people with your interests.Racine's clubs are formed for various things.Some indulge in bringing certain programs before the public.Many are merely friends united to hold their friendship more sacred.Praise must be given to many of Racine's Organizations which have helped the needy.Much charitable work has been done by Racine's loyal service clubs. Fine Human Products 10.Racine can well be proud of her human products.We have produced skilled people of all professions.The whole world comes to Racine to find a queen to rule her international fair.Our lives are full of relations with other people.Where people are brotherly to one another, that community induces people to reside there.In my opinion Racine is a very friendly city.Note the persons you come in contact with.On the whole they are all pleasant."To be a friend is to have a friend."You as a private citizen can be Racine's friend; if you are friendly to its people.A Toast to Racine!I Respect You!I Love You!I Will Work For You!
