I am researching the family of William Adams, his first wife Aletia RYDER/RIDER CHAMPNEY, and second wife, Harriet BENTON.
William Adams was born 15 December 1806 in Monkton, County Kent, England.I do not know when he came to the United States. The date of his first marriage to Aletia Champney was 29 January 1836.This date was recorded in the Adams/Waterman family bible. No location for his first marriage was recorded in the bible.Aletia's death date was recorded as 31 November 1838 in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.Possibly Aletia's maiden name was Ryder/Rider, and Champney/Champion, a first husband.William and Aletia had one child, a son, Joseph Adams.Joseph's birth date was recorded in the bible as 31 October 1836, born in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio.
I first found William Adams in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, where he married his second wife, Harriet Benton on 8 December 1842. William and Harriet had two children in Painesville, namely, Mary Horton Adams (married Waterman)born 15 June 1844, and my great grandfather, Franklin Willis Adams, born 13 July 1849.Between July 1849 and July 1850, the family moved to the Neenah area of Winnebago County, Wisconsin. They are enumerated in Neenah on 18 July 1850:

Adams, Harriet31 fNew York
Adams, Joseph A.13 mOhio
Adams, Mary H.6 fOhio

(I did not find son, Joseph A. Adams, in the Village of Neenah census.)
Sometime after the 1860 census was enumerated, the familymoved to Plainfield, Waushara County, Wisconsin, where Harriet died on 16 January 1868, and William on 25 December 1870.Both are buried at the Plainfield Cemetery. No tombstones were found for them in 1987 when I visited Plainfield, but they are listed in the cemetery records.William and Harriet's birth and death dates are listed in the Adams/Waterman family bible.
I have not been able to locate William and Aletia's son, Joseph A. Adams.I do not know what ever became of him.I would like to find him, and obtain information about his family for my records.
Mary Horton Adams married Sidney Carlos Waterman on 8 December 1867 in Plainfield, Wisc. They lived in Plainfield all their lives, and have many descendants still in the area.
Franklin Willis Adams enlisted in the Civil War (age 15), and when he returned to Plainfield after the war, he moved to Tazewell County, Illinois, where he married his first wife, Elizabeth Rachel McCullough on 3 July 1871 in Circleville, Tazewell County, Illinois.Elizabeth and Franklin had 3 children. They are my great grandparents.Elizabeth died on 24 February 1884 in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois.Franklin married second to Maggie Jones, and had 3 more children, moving to Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois. After his second wife died, he married the third time to the widow, Ellen Paschon Leigraf in 1915.Franklin died in 1937 in Peoria, Illinois, and is buried in Peoria.
Lucius Burr Adams, the youngest child of William and Harriet, eventually followed his brother to Tazewell County, Illinois, where he married Emma Lucinda Woolley on 24 February 1881 in Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois.Sometime after the 1910 census, Lucius and Emma moved to Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, where they lived out their lives.
In a search of the Lake County, Ohio early census, I find these surnames that may be connected to William, Aletia, and Harriet. Most curious is the middle names William and Harriet gave their 3 childen, all could be surnames of relatives, HORTON, WILLIS, and BURR. Also RYDER/RIDER and CHAMPNEY/CHAMPION.Possibly William married Aletia in Ohio.I was told by a now deceased Adams cousin that Harriet Benton had relatives follow her to Wisconsin.Namely WILCOX, PALMER, FITCH, and of course, BENTON.
I would love to find out when William came to this country. He was born in 1806, years before the birth and death records were kept in England.I do not know anything about the parents of William, Aletia, or Harriet.I would love to hear from anyone connected to this family.
