Hello: I have been researching my birth mother, Betty Louise Campbell Workman Cazad, for a book I'd like to write. She lived in Huntington most of her life, born in 1921 and died in 1992. In 2005, I found my 3 older FULL birth siblings -- Crys, Robin and Teresa Workman, who all grew up in Huntington and graduated from Huntington East HS.
I have recently been able to obtain Betty's school records from Cabell Co. ISD, and they show that she attended Cammack Junior High in the 1930s. She also attended 10th grade at Huntington High in the 1937-38 school year, but dropped out of school that year at the semester break to go to work at Walgreens in the WV Building.
I'm looking for some help if anyone is able: I've been trying to find old-timers who may have known Betty and have memories they can share. Of course, most of the folks who would've known her as a youngster have passed away, but I've found a number of folks Betty's age -- they just didn't know her.
If any of you have parents who are still living and attended Cammack Jr. High and/or HHS in the 1930s, can you please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org? I would love to visit with your parents if they did. Also, Betty was a fantastic singer and was in Glee Club during her school days, so if any of your moms were in Glee Club at Cammack or HHS in the '30s, they might have known Betty. Betty sang publicly with some bands, including in Logan, WV, in the late 1940s and early '50s, and at the Sand Bar in the Marting Hotel in Ironton, OH, when she was pregnant with me in 1960. I also have visited with Ralph Shannon, one of the stars of the old "Saturday Night Jamboree" on WSAZ-TV, and he confirmed that he auditioned Betty for the show and she appeared as a guest a couple of times in the 1950s. I understand that Betty even sang some down at VFW 1064 in Huntington, and sang with a band whose leader apparently was nicknamed "Scotty," but I haven't been able to track that down.
Even if your parents aren't living, maybe you know of other old-timers I could contact who were Cammack/HHS students in the '30s. If Betty had stayed in school, she would've graduated in 1940, but from her school records, it looks like she missed a couple of years as well.
Starting in the 1950s, Betty worked in Huntington at the Owens-Illinois plant, Bell's, Nasser's and Lawrence Drugstore. From about 1967 to 1988, she was a clerk at Stevens Drugstore in downtown Huntington, and I've talked to Joe Stevens Jr., who hired her. The last 20 years of her life, Betty was married to Ronnie Cazad, who used to be a country singer, and they lived on Ohio River Road.
Thank you all so much for your help. Please drop me an email at email@example.com if you have any suggestions.
