Matthew Abbett, who is an old and truthful citizen of this District came personally before me, and made Oath in due form of law, that he knew John Cobb and Frances Smith whom the said Cobb married in his young days in Spartanburg District in this State, that he removed from Spartanburg to Greenville in the year 1784 and returned again to Spartanburg the next year 1785 and that a short time after his return - only a few years afterwards, the said John Cobb was married to the said Frances Smith, by common reputation, tho he was not at the marriage, but lived very near & is convinced they were lawfully married & has known them ever since until the old mans death & they lived together as Husband and Wife & he has never heard the legality of the marriage doubted. He further states Mrs. Cobbs first son after marriage was born about two weeks prior to the birth of his own oldest son, who was born 24 August 1790.
