Abbott, John Wesley John Wesley Abbott was born 24 April, 1828, the second eldest son of James Hial and Jane Mills (Key) Abbott. He married Rebecca Blevins in 1848 near Bremen, Alabama. Soon after "the surrender", John Wesley moved his family from Mulberry Valley near old Arkadelphia to a strip of land of Dogs' Creek, his land extending over two miles along the creek. It was evident that Indians had lived in that select area, as the family found mortars and pestles used to grind corn and for many years mounds believed to be Indian burial sites could be seen. Over a period of months John Wesley built a home and store house. Then he added a mill and gin on the creek. Both the store and mill drew many people and both enterprises seemed to pros- per. Crops produced by the farmers of the area were transported by ox and wagon to Decatur (a round trip that took seven days in good weather) and merchandise to stock the store was brought on the return trip. Although indications are that John Wesley never attended a for- mal medical school, he passed his County Board Exam in 1889 and was listed in the 1890 MASA Register as located in Bremen where he had built his own hospital. He was licensed to practice through Alliance Insurance Company. Doctors who trained under Dr. Abbott include Dr. J. C. Martin. Rebecca and John Wesley took the Lord seriously when He said, "Go forth and multiply". They were the parents of thirteen chil- dren: James Marion born 14 June, 1850, married (1) Nancy Elizabeth Sutton, (2) Margaret Faught, (3) Sarah Ann Murphree; Hiel born 20 May, 1853, married Fanny Brady; Jane born 19 June, 1854, married W. Francis W. Leeth; William Washington born 26 November, 1864, married Samantha Jane Leeth; Franklin born 23 April 1868 married (1) Rita (Kitty) McDaniel (2) Fannie M. Ransom; Mary Etta born 12 August 1872, married N athaniel Daniel Self; Robert married Etta Williford; Belinda who married a Metts and Charlie who married Lela Forrester . John Wesley and Rebecca were charter members of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Rebecca died 20 August, 1885 and in 1890 John Wesley married Molly Dollar by whom he had a son Weaver who died in infancy. John Wesley died 7 November, 1915. He, Rebecca and Weaver are buried in the older section of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church near Bremen, along with John Wesley's parents and other family members.
