I have a George ABBOTT, miller - born 1827 Derbyshire - (my Great Grandfather) who emigrated to Natal on the "Edward" under arrangement with W.J.Iron's Christian Emigration and Colonization Society; was a Trader - Abbott & Co, Veralum, Zululand around September 1860;worked as a Surveyor's Assistant to Moreland's Surveyor, Edmund Tatham until April 1851; applied for a position as Tide-Waiter on 7th. April 1851; applied for the position of Clerk with the Resident Magistrate, Durban;sold his 20 acre Emigrant Allotment at the Umhloti for 11 Pounds; in February 1852 he took over premises at the end of Smith Street Durban which he converted into a livery and bait stable. He sailed from Durban in September 1852 on the "Harrah" or "Hannah" for Melbourne. Born 17th July 1827 Marlpool (Heanor) Derbyshire to George ABBOTT and Annie HARDY. Died 17th. September 1891, Bundalong, North Yarrawonga, Victoria, Australia.
