I just discovered that you replied to my message some 30 months ago! Sorry not to have noticed sooner.
I descend from one of the bad guys. Barton Lovelace is almost certainly my 5G grandfather. (My father's mother was a Loveless--same family, different spelling.) It is not clear whether a trial was held that resulted in Barton's and John's acquittal. They may have fled the area. If we are interpreting the records correctly, Barton married again in 1798 in TN and was on some KY tax rolls in the early 1800s. Then he disappears. He was probably dead by 1820 or so.
John Compton may have been a wartime buddy. Both Compton and Lovelace are members of Capt. Aeneas Campbell's unit, formed 1776 in Maryland.
