I am a descendant of Maurice and Alice Abbott of Guildford, England through their son Sir Morris. I noticed that the online family tree listings give Maurice many different birth years from 1515 to 1540, and since I currently live close to Guildford I thought I would stop by the church to see if I could sort out his birthday. The caretaker was fairly new and didn't know anything about the church records, but because they were parents to some famous sons they did indeed have a brass plaque mounted in the church in their honor.
This is the wording of the plaque, spelling "as is":
"Here lie the bodies of Maurice Abbott and Alice his wife, inhabitants of this town of Guildford, who lived together married 58 yeeres & had 6 sones all whome they left alive. Shee dyed the 15 of September 1606 being 80 yeere old and he the 25 of the same moneth and yeere being of age 86 yeeres. Both in assured hope of a joyfull resurrection."
The top of the plaque shows the figure of a man and woman on either side of what looks like a small alter. Underneath them are figures which represent the 6 sons, with figures of 3 men on each side of an alter. The writing is below the etched figures.
This plaque is mounted on the wall over some benches, and I am not sure if they are really buried underneath. The old church was destroyed when the bell tower fell in the 1700's. The caretaker told me that George Abbott was buried in that spot, although his elaborate tomb was moved several feet away. If George is buried there, possibly his parents are in the same spot, or it is possible that the plaque was rescued from the old church and just mounted in a convenient spot on the wall.
So, if this is correct, Maurice was born between Sep 1519 and Sep 1520 and Alice was born between Sep 1525 and Sep 1526. I have seen a wedding date of June 30, 1548 listed online, which is in agreement with the plaque's marrige record of 58 years in 1606.
I will look around a little more to see if I can find accurate birthdays.
