Hiel C. Abbott, also in your list, is his brother.These men came from a part of Alabama with mixed feelings and loyalties about the war.From our discussions at our
reunions, Isreal apparently deserted the CSA in the latter
stages of the war and joined the Ala 1st along with a number
of other solders from Walker and particularly Winston county, which was known as the "Free state of Winston" because of its pro-Union politics.
The August issue of The Abbott Newsletter will have a little more on Isreal and I am sure there will be more discussion
at the Labor Day reunion.
