Azro Ashley Abbott is my great-great-great grandfather.
The following is taken from an article from Rose's Nobles County History [Minnesota], which was published in 1908, after the writer had interviewed Azro Abbott.
"The Abbott's are of colonial stock, they came from England in 1634. They settled in Massachusetts where they lived until 1773. They then moved to Stockbridge, Vermont, residing on land which to this day (1908) is known as "the old Abbott ranch", a tract of land containing about six hundred acres.
"Azro Abbott was born in Stockbridge, Vermont, January 25, 1834. His father was Justin Abbott, born in 1807. His mother was Sarah Gibbs Abbott, born in 1816 in Bethel, Vermont. Azro spent his boyhood days in Vermont. He was married to Ellen Green in 1855 at Royalton, Vermont. From 1862 to 1865 Azro served in the War of Rebellion. Upon his return the family then moved to Iowa in 1868. In 1870 he moved to Minnesota. He hauled the lumber for his new home from Windom. He also served on the first grand Jury in Nobles County in 1872. He raised blooded stock on his farm in Indian Lake Township. (Aberdeen Angus cattle, Poland China swine, and White Wyandotte chickens)
"(Justin Abbott's early relatives came to America in 1530 but returned again to England.)
"Azro Ashley Abbott married Ellen A. Green in 1855 at Royalton, Vermont. While living in Vermont three children were born to this union. A girl, Flora, and a boy, Walter, at the ages of six and four respectively, died in a diptheria epidemic while their father was off fighting the Civil War.
"The third child, Elsie Amanda, was born February 25, 1867 after the epidemic. When Elsie was a year and a half old the family moved to Iowa in 1868, living near New Hartford where Laura Lee was born February 4, 1870. Later the same year Azro and Ellen, with their girls, moved to Minnesota, homesteading in Indian Lake Township, Section 28.
"Here Robert Abbott was born only two days after the arrival of the family. Robert was the first white boy to be born in Nobles County. Another child, Minnie Sota, was born April 4, 1873.
"Elsie Amanda married William Henry Bass on October 24, 1886. To this union were born Izella, George, Lee, Ray, Harrison, Leona, Walter, Minnie, William, Westley, Lyndon, and another boy.
"Laura Lee married Levi Peterson. Their children were Earl, Goldie, Vernie, Lochsley, Loren, and Glenn.
"Robert Abbott married Augusta Hoffman. To this union were born two sons, Ashley Azro and Vincent.
"Minnie Sota married Willis Proper. To this union two sons were born, Leone and Mark.
"Leone has a daughter, Nona Beth Spiegel presently living near or at Sioux City."
