Sallie, I am Margaret Percival your second cousin twice removed (I think I got that right).Anyway, your mother and I corresponded for many years, years ago.We are both descended from Memory Prince Dermid.
I have interesting news regarding Cynthia Minerva Abbott, daughter of Solomon Abbott. She married William Dermid (from Scotland) and they had two children:Lemuel Trader Dermid (“Uncle Trade”), and Louisa Dermid. Then William Dermid took off and went to England – never heard from again that I know of.
Cynthia then took up with a Mr. Ferguson and they had three children:Raymouth Dermid, Memory Prince Dermid, and Van Buren “Van” Dermid. All of these children were given the last name of Dermid – I guess it was still Cynthia's last legal name.
She later married William Duggins and they had two children:Jay and Archer.I think Cynthia and William Duggins were married, I was told they were by Helen and Josephine – granddaughters of Uncle Trade Dermid. They remember seeing the Cynthia and William Duggins with Jay on visits when Jay was very young. They always referred to their g-grandmother Cynthia Abbott Dermid, etc., as “that woman.”We talked on the phone several times many, many years ago.We also corresponded.
Because I was searching for the ancestry of William Dermid (MacDermid, McDermid, Diarmid, MacDiarmid), Josephine and Helen called me after much debate and thinking it was the right thing to do. said I was not descended from William Dermid, but the Mr. Ferguson mentioned above. They had met him many times in their youth and were now going crazy trying in vain to remember his first name.I then went to Spartanburg and searched the courthouse, libraries, land records, everything to learn Mr. Ferguson's name and about him.I tried hard to connect him to Mary Ferguson in that area and thought he might have been her son, nothing.I then searched records in Columbia at the state archives, etc., and in Raleigh.Nothing.
A few months ago I ran across a submission by Harold Harrison who didn't have anything especially nice to say about “that woman.”It was sent to “Lyman” (?) who was working on the Duggan/Dugginsfamily.Apparently that site no long exists and I was unable to find Harold Harrison.
Before I learned this from Helen and Josephine, your mother (Reba Lewis) told me that Uncle Trade told her – when she was a little girl – that her great-grandfather's name was Ferguson. And she must remember that.So she and I worked on her line back several generations and couldn't find a Ferguson anywhere. Not on the Dermid side or the Maxwell side.I think Maxwell was the name. Then I heard from Helen and Josephine and told cousin Reba.I don't remember her response.
A few days ago I told my sister about your mother having lived in the same house all her life, but in three states. The state lines kept getting moved about taking in her homestead. Then I was your query and here I am.
If you ever discover anything about Mr. Ferguson please let me know.My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
