A lot of erroneous information has been circulated about Francis Abel & Isabel O'Connor. In the 1930s a woman who was anxious to get her information in a book even made up some stories for the book.
The name of Francis Abel was simply Francis, not John Francis Abel. The story about him being a Revolutionary War soldier on the British side lacks documentation and from what I have found becomes doubtful. There was another Francis Abel who was a British soldier who remained in America and married Phoebe O'Connor. They lived in Tennessee.I think early Abel researchers failed to determine they were two separate men.
We know that Isabel O'Connor was of Irish Royalty, but we don't know if she was a baroness or what her rank was.The stow away story lacks documentation and credibility. An affidavit filed by Isabel's grandson states he was not sure, but he thought Francis & Isabel eloped to America because her parents objected to the wedding.
Francis Abel is found in the Tax List of Wythe Co, VA in 1795. I have found nothing on Francis & Isabel prior to that which can be documented.
