My family was from CA. I just recently moved to MT, and have found Abels all over the Pac/NW. My line of Abels came to the US is the 1850's, Immigrating from Mechlenberg, Germany. Gggrandparents were Johann Frederick Abel and Anna Marie Kathrina Prosch. My ggrandfather and two brothers traveled westward from Wisconsin (Fond du Lac) to CA, where two remained and my ggrandfather (JFC "Charles" Abel) went to WallaWalla, Wa and then settled into Spokane, WA. He died in Spokane in 1916, was born in 1838, one of 9 children living into adulthood. I have been told that the brothers remaining in CA became farmers in the Sac. valley, and that there is a branch, name of Calvin Abel, I believe that went into apples in Placerville. This may be part of our connection as I have been told that Johann Abel was one of the brothers, and his son George Henry is the grandfather of a newly aquainted cousin named Marianne, in Ca. It is a long story. My ggrandafther had 8 children, 4 married and had children, I am descended from Arthur Henry (Heinrich) Abel, born in WallaWalla (Washington Territory at the time)in 1882, later moved to Portland(Ore.) to put the "Port" into Portland and then developed the Port Of Oakland (CA) in the late 1920's thru the 1950's).I grew up in Oakland, never meeting any other Abels that I found a bloodline to other than immediate cousins. Does this help?
