I have found the following information for you at the Devon Records Office regarding Anne Abell, born 20th April, 1755.It is written thus:
Hatherleigh Baptisms: Anne daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Able was baptised this day 20th April 1755 (classified under Baptisms 1755).
All dates in the Parish Registers are generally baptism dates, rather than dates of birth. In the Hatherleigh registers, 'Abell' can be written as Abell, Abel or Able.In the 1600's it was generally written as Abell, but the records are extremely difficult to read.In the 1700's it was mostly Able or Abel and then reverted back to Abell in the 1800's.
The earliest burial record of Abell I could read was for 1666.At that time the old English 's' was, in fact, an 'f' shape, a bit like old German (if you know any). The record is a burial record as follows
Alse (probably Alice) the wife of Honorey (Henry) Abell, buried 13th January, 1666.
I have a lot of 'Abells' to sort out, though I still have not finished, as reading the very old records takes a long time. There is at least one brother and one sister for Anne, so I'll get back to you as soon as I have transcribed my list.
