Hi Diane, I too have been searching for my Indian family for a long time and with no success. While I don't have any info for you on your family, I can offer some suggestions of where to look. First of all if your relative found evidence of this couple in Henryville, Quebec, Canada, it might be that they were Catholic and he found them listed among the Catholic Church records. They were Fabulous at keeping great records, Indians and all. If you can find a way to contact the Catholic Church in that town it might be that they can send you a copy of whatever information they might have.
Also, I don't know where Henryville is located in Quebec, but it might be that your family was St. Francis Indian or Mikmaq or even Maliseet. They could have been Abenaki. There are So many groups of Indian people from those areas in Quebec and New Brunswick and even into New England, Maine, MA, NH and VT, that it just boggles the mind.
Also look for their surnames to change...Bernard might be BARNEY or any form you can think of.LaFrance might have been shortened to France or Frank or something else, the Indian people were great at changing their names from first to last and just switching them all around even using childrens names as their own.It makes it terribly difficult for us to research them as a result.
I wish you luck in finding your family info.Don't discount anything in your search. If something seems like its Very close to your family...research it out, they were crafty at hiding in plain sight as the saying goes. Good Luck to you.
