While researching my great great great grandfather Jonathan Abercrombie I found the following slaves mentioned in his estate inventory. In 1860, Jonathan was a farmer with $3600 in real estate and $13,000 in personal estate. He is listed on the 1860 slave schedule as owning 3 slave houses and 15 slaves. When he died without a will in 1862, his son Jonathan Jr became the executor of his estate and an inventory was made of his possessions. In his estate inventory, 15 slaves are mentioned by name. One slave listed in the 1862 inventory - Sam - was too young to be listed in the 1860 slave schedule so possibly a slave died, or was sold between 1860-1862.The spelling of the inventory is horrendous but I hope I've understood the names of the slaves for the most part. The invoice is dated December 2nd or 12th, 1862.All the male slaves are listed as "boy" regardless of age.Female slaves from 14 up are listed as "woman".Younger than 14 are "girls".
• George, about 65 years old, was sold to E.W. Abercrombie for $50.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 64 year old black male. • Allen, about 41 years old but also listed as "boy", was sold to E.W. Abercrombie for $1105.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 35 year old male that is probably him. • Jefferson, about 39, was sold to Henry P. Johnson for $1141.A note under his name says “This negro was sold on the 19th of January 1863 with interest from date.”The 1860 slave schedule lists a 33 year old man.In 1870, there is a 55 year old Jefferson Abercrombie in Laurens Co SC (p201a) with 40 year old wife Phyllis, 15 year old Emily, 12 year old Martin, and 6 year old John. The children of his former owner Jonathan Abercrombie live nearby. • Cillar, about 28, and son Sam age 2, were sold to William Babb for $1555.The slave schedule lists a 25 year old female. In 1870 Laurens Co SC (p203a) she is 40 years old living with (probable) son Anderson (20), Sam (12), and Easter (10).A 22 year old Thomas Abercrombie with 23 year old wife Mary on the previous page may be another son of Cillar’s.William Babb, son of her last enslaver, and Alexander Abercrombie, son of Jonathan Abercrombie, are both on the previous page. • Lewis, about 26 years old, was sold to a man whose name was given as Harite Roland for $1125.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 21 year old male that is possibly Lewis. • Peggy, about 26 years of age, was sold to Henry P. Johnson for $500.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 23 year old female. While I did find a 45 year old Margaret Abercrombie in 1870 Laurens Co p201a living close by Jefferson and John Abercrombie, she is probably too old to be the Peggy mentioned in the estate sale. • Esther and child Haley were sold to Loge Jonathan Abercrombie for $760.Esther is possibly the 40 year old female listed in the 1860 slave schedule.Haley could either be an 11 year old boy or the 2 year old female listed. • John, about 18, was sold to Austin Moore for $1300.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 17 year old male.In 1870 (Laurens Co SC p201a) on the same page as Jefferson who was sold to Mr Johnson lives 26 year old John Abercrombie.Because of his age, he could possibly be Jefferson’s son.He lives with 25 year old Sarah, 12 year old Henry, and 1 year old Jane. • Debbie, about 14 years old, was sold to Elizabeth Adams for $1160.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 15 year old female who could possibly be Debbie. • Caroline, about 11 years old, was sold to John Armstrong for $1105.The 1860 slave schedule lists an 8 year old girl. • James, about 10 years old, was sold to Abner Babb for $685.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 9 year old male. • The girl Awen, about 9 years old, was sold to John Hellams for $955.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 7 year old female. • Oscar, about 8 years old, was sold to Sampson Babb for $600.The 1860 slave schedule lists a 7 year old boy.
If anybody can connect to these folks, I'd love to hear from you.
