I'm not really researching the Abercrombies, but one of my ancestors, William J Woods (b 1834), was married (first wife) to a woman who I think was named Mary J(ane?) Abercrombie (b abt 1834).
In the 1860 Chattooga, GA census: W J Woods, 26 Martha J Woods, 26 Letitin P Woods, 5 (Should really be Lucian) Sarah E ABERCROMBY, 16 Robert E ABERCOMBY, 15 Winfield ABERCROMBY, 9 Hugh ABERCROMBY, 23 (All of them born in SC.)
I believe that these Abercrombies are the children of Alexander Abercrombie and Elizabeth/Elsy/Alsey Gray, and that Martha J. Woods is their sister. Also, living next door with DW and Martha J Strange is Caroline Abercrombie, age 12, who I also think is Alexander's child.
I have read that Alexander Abercrombie's parents were Jonathan Abercrombie and Mary "Polly" Woods. I think that my William J Woods might have been a cousin of Martha J Abercrombie, but I can't quite figure out the connection.
In the 1850 Laurens Co census, there is a William Woods of the right age, who is living with Robert (62) and Jane (60) Woods. They are living near a lot of people with surnames that I know are also connected with the Abercrombies: Kellet, Babb, and Gray.
If anyone knows of further Woods-Abercrombie connections, please let me know! Thanks in advance.
